The spreadsheet that became the daily briefing.

Turning manual Excel reporting into daily executive intelligence.

The situation

Stanford Health Care’s C-level leadership needed a faster and more reliable way to see critical financial and operational information. I personally took the solution from requirements and data sourcing through development, validation, deployment, and automated Tableau delivery. Approximately four years later, the dashboard continues to be used as part of daily executive reporting.

The problem

The information was managed and reviewed primarily in Excel. That process was manual, time-consuming, difficult to refresh, and more prone to errors — and it gave executives no single centralised place to understand the metrics that mattered most.

My role

Sole owner. Requirements, data sourcing, modelling, build, validation, deployment, and ongoing support.

What I did

Four phases · condensed spine

Phase 01

Understand

  • Executive reporting requirements
  • Choosing the KPIs that mattered

Phase 02

Source & model

  • Identifying source systems
  • Reporting logic and SQL

Phase 03

Build & validate

  • Three-tab dashboard design
  • Prototype review with stakeholders
  • Data and metric validation

Phase 04

Ship & support

  • Deployment and automated daily delivery
  • Ongoing support

Hardest part

Working out which metrics truly mattered to executive leadership, then locating the right data across the organisation and validating it — and finally presenting a large amount of financial and operational information in a way an executive could understand quickly.

Result

Four years on, it is still part of daily executive reporting, delivered automatically to C-level inboxes through Tableau. The durability is the result. No dollar figure is claimed.
